After a varied career and numerous releases, INSISION signed a deal with the U.S. label Severed Records in 2011. The first release was the EP ‘End Of All’ in June 2011, containing 5 tracks of epic brutal death metal. The EP was recorded just outside Stockholm at Studio Off Beat (General Surgery/Vicious Art) with the dedicated engineer Anders Eriksson.

The band followed the release in 2012 with the ‘15 Years of exaggerated Torment (Sevared Records 2012)15 Years of exaggerated Torment (Sevared Records 2012)15 Years of Exaggerated Torment’ album – once again through Severed Records. It was a compilation of old tracks and demo and live songs with some new recordings.

The band is currently working on new recordings.

]]> GOLDSBORO is a power trio based in Los Angeles with influences that read like a roll call of the greatest hard rock and heavy metal bands of all time: Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Judas Priest and AC/DC.

For the three members of Goldsboro – Kevin Roentgen, Chris Cano and Johnny Lonely, this album is the fulfillment of a shared obsession with loud rock music that dates back to their teenage years.
And now comes the band s debut album titled simply Goldsboro, and produced by Noah Shain, the man who cut the very first solo release by electronic music star, Skrillex.
But their story has a strange twist. When the seeds of Goldsboro were first planted five years ago, Kevin, Chris and Johnny were all members of a very different band - one that had a number one album and single in the UK, that toured with superstars Robbie Williams and Duran Duran, and won a BRIT Award for Best International Breakthrough Act. That band was Orson.
Orson s debut album Bright Idea sold a million copies worldwide, but they split in late 2007. And now, with Goldsboro, the trio are getting back to their roots. Roentgen says: “Between the three of us, we have that chemistry as a rock and roll power trio. The music you hear when you re 14-16 is the stuff that never really leaves you. And for us, that s 70s rock and 80s metal. That s why it feels so natural to do this. When Goldsboro plays, you re either gonna run straight to the front, or you re gonna run for the door.”

The indie pop rock band has shared dates with many national artists including We The Kings, Creed, Anberlin, The Ting Tings, Chiddy Bang, and Lovedrug and have also opened for Goo Goo Dolls, Stone Temple Pilots, OAR and Everclear.

A feature in Beatweek Magazine pointed out, “…each new endeavor the Kingsfoil boys decide to take just makes them increasingly more popular and marketable. At the very least they’re trying to make great music and have fun.”

They started out as a small acoustic duo with Jordan Davis and Tristan Martin as songwriters. After successful independent releases of their albums, ‘Thoughts on the Floor’ (2002), ‘Blueprints’ (2004), and ‘The Almond Tree ER’ (2005), the duo became a quartet; they added Joe Cipollini as their drummer and Tim Warren on bass. They proceeded to produce three new albums, ‘Last Man Standing’ in 2006, ‘Bear in the Attic’ in 2007 and the critically acclaimed self-released LP ‘On Our Own Together’ in the Summer of 2010.

In 2012 Drummer Joe Cipollini left the band and in stepped Frankie Muniz, of ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ fame. Jordan admits that he knew little of Frankie, as he was not familiar with the show. Todd Erickson, the manager of Kingsfoil who had previously managed Frankie’s past band, knew that Frankie was a fan of Kingsfoil and asked if he could audition….the rest is history!

In late 2012 the band self-released ‘A Beating Heart is a Bleeding Heart’ and with support from world renowned Philadelphia radio station 88.5 WXPN, the band dived headlong into conquering the mid-Atlantic region and beyond. As Kingsfoil hit the road with their energetic live performances and their signature songwriting, the release started to gain support nationally. Live shows followed on Fox 8 News in the Morning, CBS News, Fuse TV, Hollywood Reporter and more. The album first debuted at no. 42 on the iTunes Rock Charts and then finally succeeded to climb in to the top 40 on the Billboard charts.

Kingsfoil will be releasing two singles over the summer, this will then lead in to an album release and tour in September/October 2013.

The Crunch’s story begins on the pages of ‘Keep Yourself Alive’; an anthology of interviews with 70s rock and punk stars about their lives today, compiled by Peter Karlsson and Soren ’Sulo’ Karlsson. When Sulo – perhaps better known as the honey ’n’ gravel voice of blues-rockers Diamond Dogs – began planning a Stockholm launch event to mark the book’s publication last autumn he called upon a few of its subjects to help provide the music, and so spontaneously assembled the collective now known as The Crunch.

Joining Sulo are original Clash sticksman Terry Chimes, bassist Dave Tregunna – who made his own essential contribution to punk rock in Sham 69 and Lords of the New Church, and on guitar Mick Geggus – whose crucial role in creating the Oi sound as part of the Cockney Rejects was recently documented in acclaimed biopic ‘East End Babylon’. Past credits don’t come much more impressive than those The Crunch boast between them, but the previous achievements of this iconic group are the least of a many good reasons to pay attention to the music they’re making together today.
Having recognised a unique musical chemistry on that night in Stockholm, these four seasoned pros wasted no time in seeking to capture it. By January they’d reunited at London’s Berry Street studios, and in the time since then what looked to be a very exciting prospect on paper has rapidly become more than the sum of its parts on record. What’s as apparent as the wealth of experience – and just as appealing – is an infectious energy and air of earnest enthusiasm amongst the group, which lends the feel of a fresh, new act.

Fuelling The Crunch from the start has been the simple shared love of rock ‘n’ roll and enjoyment of playing, and this spirit shines from the songs that are now flowing out of Berry Street. Two stays at the studio have yielded ten tracks to date, and the strength of this first material has encouraged the quartet to clear their diaries and rush back to record more in late April. With little discussion, and no pause to be considered either a ‘side-project’ or ‘supergroup’, The Crunch has quickly and quite organically developed into a fully committed four-piece band.

Both that gang-mentality and the sense of fun surrounding the sessions are strongly apparent on the first two tracks to surface. Debut single ‘Down by the Border’ is released on 7” vinyl via Legal Records on June 3 and offers a enticing introduction to The Crunch. Although a volatile punk rock edge is unmistakable in Chimes and Tregunna’s taught, rattling rhythms, the sound is not that of a straight-forward ‘77 supergroup, but rather immense, infectious power-pop. Geggus’ versatile skills on guitar are used to great effect on the huge hooks, while Sulo’s distinctive voice heads up some rich harmonies as well as delivering a dose of grit. ‘Down By The Border’ may be the obvious theme song on the 7”, with it’s cry of “let’s take it to The Crunch!”, but there’s an equally strong statement of the band’s intentions to get back to the pure passion for playing rock ’n’ roll in b-side ‘Gangster Radio’ where, after declaring he’s “singing from the heart”, Sulo proclaims “I know where I’m going, where I started from”.

One thing The Crunch are keen to make clear is that this is only the start, and grander plans are now fast unfolding. A debut album is due in October, which the band will support with a full UK tour when they intend to air both the new material and some classic cuts from their considerable collective back catalogue.

]]> Marnie Stern the album mirrors Marnie Stern, the woman. Birthed during a challenging period in her life, the self-titled Marnie Stern is a compendium of life stories both bitter and sweet.

From ballads to her signature pop guitar-tapping style, Stern and long-time co-conspirator Zach Hill have churned out (for lack of a better word) an enormous album that will further cement Stern as a rising star in todayʼs progressive music landscape. Stern also enlists the bass talents of psych-rock Canadian musician Matthew Flegel (of the band Women) and up-and-coming mixer Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Funeral Party) resulting in Stern stepping up her sonic game and revealing a mature and more focused side of herself. “I wanted to pay more attention to the delicate and subtly layered spaces in between sound and just make things louder and fuller where I didnʼt on my last 2 records.” When asked to sum her album up she maintains, “It’s direct and honest and real. Iʼm no longer taking cover under guitar lines or yelping vocals.”

Marnieʼs third and latest LP, while clearly containing her strongest songs ever, had its fumbles on the way to the finish line. She laughs when describing how the initial recording files were lost and ultimately retrieved through a series of trials-by-fire (upon which many a cigarette was lit) and in one complete statement, she quips: “Holy Doodle!” You will find both the artist and the album to be brighter, louder, and bustling with confidence as the end result.

Clearly, Marnie Stern’s life and music are not easily separated; which is why Marnie Stern the record and Marnie Stern the person have REAL personality. Upon hearing her last two albums, In Advance of the Broken Arm (2007) and This Is It And I Am It And You Are It And So Is That And He Is It And She Is It And It Is It And That Is That (2008), itʼs quite evident that Stern lives in between the lines of chaos and harmony. While Sternʼs previous efforts garnered much critical acclaim, highlighting Sternʼs dexterity with both guitar playing and songwriting, she still remains the underdog of contemporary celebrated female musicians.

Three albums into her career, this certainly leaves her exposed. Yet, within that exposure, we find something more relatable and familiar to us all; vulnerability and resilience. And with this collection of songs, all you hear is…ʻMarnie Sternʼ…which is destined for greatness.

TRASH KIT are a gang of facepainted flag-bearers who have a wild feel for melody and a heartfelt kick inside each song. Mixing chaos, considered songcraft and overlapping harmonies in equal measure, the female trio sound as joyful as they are focussed.

Rachel Aggs, Rachel Horwood and Ros Murray formed the band in early 2009, and since then have been lighting up London, energising the UK underground with their raw performances and promise. Trash Kit have a sound of their very own, it’s both urbane and primal, drawing on the potential of punk and the naturalism of an internal folk music.

Last year Columbus, Ohio duo twenty one pilots signed to prestigious label Fueled By Ramen and have since had a whirlwind 12 months. They’re now ready to hit the UK with their label debut album “Vessel” to be released later this year and following an incredible sold out show at the Barfly in March the band have announced a small UK run. They will be playing three dates in June, kicking off in Birmingham on 1 June, playing Manchester on 5 June and The Garage in London on 6 June.

Having already self-released two albums, the first in 2009 and second in 2011 the duo quickly attracted serious label attention following a sold out hometown show in Columbus – known for their irrepressible on-stage energy, twenty one pilots have built an avid international following with their crazy live performances.

“Vessel” sees twenty one pilots expanding upon the distinctive fusion of piano-driven indie-rocktronica, ably supported in the studio with superstar producer Greg Wells (Weezer, Adele, Aerosmith) behind the board. Songs like “Holding On To You” prompted Billboard to hail the guys “wind-up-toy of a single” as irresistible “saccharine punk rap”.

]]> Attention Thieves are a four piece Rock band from Reading who formed in 2010. Immediately their energetic live shows and infectious songs captivated audiences and began to stir things up in the music scene. The band has a sound which is catchy and commercial yet will still have the respect of the underground, combining many genres.

Attention Thieves have continued to tour up and down the country building a strong fan base and name for themselves in the UK. They released EP look a little closer, the EP was put in to all major stores with distribution from Warner Brothers. The EP received great reviews from major magazines and support/airplay from major radio stations and TV channels.
The band recently opened the new ride Swarm at Thorpe park which gave them great exposure with much regional press and have been busy on the festival front playing Beach break Festival, make a scene, Redfest and the BBC introducing stage at 2012’s Reading and Leeds festival.

Reading group Attention Thieves, who formed in 2009, are hitting their stride at exactly the right time. The Berkshire punk-rock quartet have toured their infectious, energetic and punchy tunes across the UK patiently building a loyal fanbase on and off social networks.Along with a well received debut EP, Look A Little Closer, the band have been enjoying plenty of airplay on Kerrang Radio, BBC Radio 1 and XFM. Perhaps most excitingly, they recently performed at the opening of a new ride at Thorpe Park.

They met during a stay KRS-One had at the Bronx Franklin Avenue Armory Shelter. La Rock (real name Scott Sterling) worked as a social worker there. The duo would begin to create music. After being rejected by radio DJs Mr. Magic and Marley Marl, KRS-One would go on to diss the two and those associated with them, sparking what would later be known as The Bridge Wars. Additionally, KRS had taken offense to “The Bridge”, a song by Marley Marl’s protege MC ShanQueensbridge was the birthplace of hip hop, though MC Shan has repeatedly denied this claim. Still, KRS “dissed” the song with the BDP record “South Bronx”; next, a second round of volleys would ensue with Shan’s “Kill That Noise” and BDP’s “The Bridge Is Over”. KRS-One, demonstrating his nickname “The Blastmaster”, gave a live performance that devastated MC Shan, and many conceded he had won the battle. Many believe this live performance to be the first MC battle where rappers attack each other, instead of a battle between who can get the crowd more hyped.

B.D.P released their debut album Criminal Minded in 1987. The album, whose cover pictured BDP draped in ammunition and brandishing guns, is often credited with setting the template for the burgeoning genres of hardcore and gangsta rap. Following the fatal shooting of Scott La Rock in 1987, KRS was determined to continue Boogie Down Productions through the tragedy, releasing the album By All Means Necessary in 1988. He was joined by beatboxer D-Nice, rapper Ramona “Ms. Melodie” Parker (whose marriage to Kris would last from 1988 to 1992), and Kris’s younger brother DJ Kenny Parker, among others. However Boogie Down Productions would remain Kris’s show, and their content would become increasingly political through their subsequent releases Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop, Edutainment, Live Hardcore Worldwide and Sex and Violence.

KRS-One was the primary initiator behind the H.E.A.L. compilation and the Stop the Violence Movement; for the latter he would attract many prominent MCs to appear on the 12-inch single “Self Destruction”. As Parker adopted this “humanist”, less violent approach, he turned away from his “Blastmaster” persona and towards that of “The Teacha”, although he has constantly used “Blastmaster” throughout his career.

“My first ‘Speaking Words’ tour and I get to do it in the UK and Ireland? Really? Wow, how fucking cool is that!!! My one-off show in London went so well and now I get to speak words at you all over the place. Thank you for having a superior sense of humour.

I’m calling it ‘Speaking Words’ because the pretension of saying I am doing a ‘Spoken Word’ tour is too much to bear. This ain’t no poetry reading. This isn’t an evening of sensitive discourse.

It’s an evening of ridiculous truth. It’s me talking (swearing) about this insane life I’ve led over the last 31 years, the people I’ve met and the shit that’s happened. And when I’m done swearing, you can ask me anything you want, the floor is yours. Cheers my friends, see you in May and June.” Scott Ian

In a career spanning three decades, Scott Ian, as the co-founding member of Anthrax, helped to create the “New Wave of American Heavy Metal” or as it’s more commonly known, “Thrash Metal” in the mid-80’s. Scott is widely known as the face of Anthrax, and for being a constant and extremely recognizable figure in the worlds of music, poker, comics, movies and television.

In a rare outing Scott will do a spoken word performance. The show is very entertaining and funny, filled with stories from his 30+ years of travelling around the world. The night concludes with a Q & A where the audience gets to ask Scott what they want to know.

]]> Times Red are a band for genuine music fans. They write songs that are honest, heartfelt, searingly personal and emotional, only with melodies you can hum and choruses that pack a punch.

You can tell that Scott Ritchie, Luke White and Staz Nair have spent time honing their craft, with several years’ worth of compositional and performance experience under their belts, playing gigs and learning how to pen tunes for maximum impact.

“We’re guys who write music and play and enjoy being onstage,” says Scott. Luke describes Times Red’s music as “truthful, genuine”. Staz cites the inspirations for their accomplished, soulful sound: Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, The Script and Bruno Mars. And Scott adds that their love of harmony comes from classic R&B.

They explain the unique Times Red setup, with the three frontmen – Scott on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Staz on keyboards and vocals and Luke handling harmonies and beatboxing duties – and the three supporting musicians on guitar, bass and drums. It’s an approach that works well in the studio, and allows for high-energy performances onstage.

Times Red have paid their dues. Scott and Essex boy Luke, who studied Performing Arts at college, met on the gig circuit, cutting their teeth playing covers of Beatles and Motown hits across Britain and Europe. Scott, originally from Scotland, and Staz, who’s half Russian half Indian, have known each other since the latter was 16 and came to live with Scott’s family in London. All three have worked behind the scenes in the fashion and music industries, where they gleaned ideas about presentation and, as they put it, “the need to develop one’s craft”.

In 2012 they met their manager, who encouraged them “to be honest and play to our strengths, and find a sound that was honest to us”. They amassed a wealth of material, their songs bright and infectious only with thoughtful, often soul-searching lyrics about disillusionment and despair – Staz has a background of family struggles while Scott has battled his own personal demons.

For Times Red, music is therapy. “I’m very open about my demons,” reveals Scott, “but they don’t dictate who I am. I’m the same as anyone: fragile and vulnerable. And I write about it.” He continues: “Our music isn’t dark. But it’s built into the way I process and cleanse my spirit and soul to write about it. The songs reflect the emotions of a modern-day, 25-year-old man.” He sums up by saying of songwriting: “It’s a cathartic process. There’s a depth to our music because there’s a depth to us.”  “Not that our music is depressing,” checks Luke. “It’s fun, and it makes you want to dance.”

Each of them brings a different element to bear on the songwriting process. “We all have a musical ear even if we haven’t written the song being worked on,” explains Scott. “We discuss arrangements, chords – everything. We have a good working relationship. There’s mutual respect. A song isn’t finished until it’s been run by all of us.” “I’m melody-driven, Scott is into concepts and Luke brings personality and energy,” decides Staz, offering some insight into their various roles.

They all agree that they want the band to be big, so that their music can reach the widest possible audience. And so it made perfect sense that, in March 2012, Times Red were invited to audition for X-Factor.

“They wanted us to give the show credibility,” suggests Scott. They got far enough in the series – including being picked as the “Wild Card” – for them to gain widespread recognition. They used X-Factor as a springboard for success.

Now they are poised to release their self-penned songs with support from virtual music label R&R Music, headed by Eric Nicoli, former CEO of EMI Music Group, who was blown away by Times Red when he saw them play live.

“We always have conversations about how we’ll know when we’re doing well,” smiles Scott. “Will it be when one of our songs is played in some random bar, or when it’s an option on a karaoke machine? Not that sales in themselves are the most important thing. No, for Times Red the pleasure is in the recording and performing, and being able to make a living as musicians.

 

“All that matters is being able to live off music, 24/7, and not have to worry about doing anything else,” says Scott. “That’s all we want. We have such a good time making and performing our music. And the best part of it all is that people are listening to it and enjoying it, coming to our gigs and getting excited. Music is there to provoke emotion, and that’s the effect it’s having on our audiences right now. That’s living the dream.”

]]> What happens when you put a bunch of bloodthirsty music-loving goblins together? Well, a lot of disembowelment, but also a lot of catchy tunes. Formed six millennia ago, and practicing only every other leap year on a full moon, the band has perfected their brand of crushing goblin music.

If you didn’t believe that first part, NEKROGOBLIKON is a goblin metal band hailing from the grim metal locale of California, USA. The band started as a summer side project of Nicky and Tim, but outgrew their humble beginnings quickly. Their debut album Goblin Island, a musical hell-storm of goblin proportions, was recorded over Summer and early Fall of 2006. They released it themselves, January 1st, 2007.

Nekrogoblikon did the usual band-member musical chairs for a while, but their current lineup is both awesome AND rad. After spending years playing numerous shows and honing their craft, they released their second full-length album, STENCH, which was produced by Nekrogoblikon with Zack Ohren at Castle Ultimate Studios and the Goblin Fortress.

]]> North London band Zaphonic crashed onto the scene in February of this year with a sell out headlining gig at the Camden Barfly. They have since been on tour playing at some of the UKs most iconic rock venues and are now set to perform a one off gig at The Garage, Islington in aid of the Ben Kinsella Trust. Zaphonic has a distinct sound which merges classic British rock, futuristic hip hop and dub to create a fresh alternative rock vibe. The lyrics and heavily cathartic performances are often seeded with personal experiences of struggles, addictions and musings on the psychology of life which are complimented by loud heavy drum beats and distorted guitars.

For three decades Nine Below Zero have delivered an explosive mix of Blues & Rock that never fail to leave their audiences illuminated and exhausted. After thousands of shows together, this incendiary on-stage chemistry has enabled Nine Below Zero to sell-out venues all over Europe.

Special guests (on stage at 7:45pm), Eddie & The Hot Rods are still led by lead singer Barrie Masters. The Hot Rods began life in 1976, when four teenagers from Southend on Sea got together playing their own style of fast energetic Rock ‘n’ Roll and R&B. They soon became a big hit on the London scene, catching the eyes and ears of the music press and the major record companies. Gabriel and Michael met as law students at university in 2003. Their shared enjoyment of guitar based music led them to form RAINMAKER, combining Sanghera’s soulful vocals with Constantine’s catchy melodies and honest lyrics. RAY KEITH

DJ, Producer, Remixer, Record Label Head Honcho, Radio & TV Presenter and well-known counterpart in the UK and World Wide Music Industry has been on the Jungle/DnB circuit for at least 15 years.

He has managed to notch up two of the scenes most memorable releases of all time The Renegade Terrorist and The Chopper. Ray set up his record label Dread Recordings in 1994 and hasnt looked back. Has lead to many collaborations with many artists such as Shades Of Rhythm, Moby and Orbital to name a few.

OZZIE

Brighton based producer Ozzie has created a name for himself amongst the UK Trap scene. Featuring collaborations with brother Hucci as well as DOLĆE and TRILL.iam

Former City banker Mistabishi nominated ‘Best Newcomer’
in the Drum ‘N’ Bass Awards following the release of his hugely successful debut album, ‘Drop’, whilst tracks such as Printer Jam on Hospital Records Found acclaim and support from the likes of Radio 1′s Annie Mac.

CRIM3s

Sadie and Isaac make up CRIM3S, a grunge rave duo who we met each other whilst living in a north London warehouse called The Monkey Farm.

Their sound is chillingly dark, both lyrically and production-wise, and there’s usually a ‘fuck-the-world’ inspiration behind each song. Sadie brings the shouty vocals, while Isaac gets lo-fi, distorted and devilish with the beats, and their love of art has helped them to create visuals that could make any Tumblr-wave kid go weak at the knees.

DARQ E FREAKER

This young Londoner is now the undisputed King of technicolour Grime. His tunes are a hit you like a furious kaleidoscopic tidal wave of synths and hi-hats; over-flowing with energy and colour, on paper they shouldn’t work – but in practice they absolutely murder the rave.

Not that many releases to his name too date, but he has made them count. He was on the buttons for the game-changer that was TEMPA T’s “Next Hype” – which reinvigorated the scene and is still one of the biggest ever Grime anthems, and launched Tempz into superstardom.

‘Unsound’, released in July 2012 is Mission of Burma’s fifth studio album, continuing their remarkable legacy. The record sees Mission of Burma messing with their comfort zone by recording in their Boston rehearsal space which doubles as a recording studio: Analog Divide. As usual, Roger Miller (guitar, vocals), Clint Conley (bass, vocals) and Peter Prescott (drums, vocals) share the songwriting credits with their distinct styles. All of them tried their hand at other instruments and sounds, allowing them to take risks with their creativity and giving them a more fluid line-up. Of course, regular fourth member Bob Weston (of Shellac) was on hand to provide the tape loops and production duties.

]]> Australian extreme metal band, THY ART IS MURDER, have been making an unmistakeable impression in the underground metal scene since their initial conception in late 2005. They have headlined countless sold out live performances, sold over 10000 copies of their releases, received over 2 million ‘fan video’ plays on ‘YouTube’ and around 2 million music plays on their ‘MYSPACE’ profile, and have over 40000 ‘Facebook’ fans.

Originally forming out of Sydney’s western suburbs with members all around 15 years of age, this incredibly hard working 5 piece band released a 3-track demo entitled “This Hole Isn’t Deep Enough For The Twelve Of You” in early 2007 and began playing local shows, quickly becoming renowned for their unrivalled highly energetic and uncompromising live performances. After independently touring the east coast of Australia, they returning home to write and record their infamous debut EP, “Infinite Death”, which was released in August 2008 to an overwhelming response, achieving a top 10 chart position on the AIR charts and selling out its initial pressing within weeks.

After the release of their EP, THY ART IS MURDER received a huge explosion of popularity online with a massive amount of activity and plays on their official’MYSPACE’profile. The EP, and specifically the song “Whore To A Chainsaw”, became a huge underground hit worldwide and garnered them substantial local and overseas attention. The release was promoted extensively over the next annum with the band headlining several successful tours, gaining them a huge fan-base nationally around Australia.

Early 2010 saw THY ART IS MURDER commence self-production of their debut full-length album. On its release in late July 2010, “The Adversary” sold over 2000 copies in its first week and shortly after the band embarked on a largely sold-out launch tour around Australia. After several more of their own, they joined the very successful ‘MISTAKE CLOTHING’ tour with CONFESSION, followed shortly by supporting DESPISED ICON on their national Australian farewell run, then finishing the year with THE RED SHORE on their national album release. This extensive live coverage solidified their position as one of the most popular modern metal acts in Australia.

THY ART IS MURDER spent the majority of 2011 continuing to focus their sonic live assault on their home territories, including the second ‘MISTAKE CLOTHING’ tour and a national run with main support coming from Germany’s WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH. Late in 2011, they locked themselves away and commenced writing and rehearsing material for their sophomore album. A pre-production demo song entitled “Infinite Forms” was posted online which showcases a more mature and focused song writing approach while still retaining the brutality, heaviness and unharnessed aggression of their previous material.

Katchafire are an all Maori reggae band from Hamilton, who have achieved phenomenal success over the last few years. Their debut album, the prophetically named Revival release by Mai Music, has sold in excess of 45,000 copies with Giddy Up being the biggest selling single of 2003. 2004’s follow up, Slow Burning, was similarly well received, selling 20,000 copies in the first week of release.

The acclaim has not just been in New Zealand though: two tours to Hawaii in 2006 have resulted in sales of 14,000 copies of Revival, and Slow Burning was released there in March 2007. A promotional campaign in the UK last year also garnered amazing feedback from Don Letts (Acclaimed documentary maker and Clash tour DJ) and David Katz (Music journalist) amongst others, and radio plays from Steve Barker (BBC), Charlie Gillet (BBC) and, most importantly, David Rodigan (Kiss FM and others), who highly rates their orthodox approach.

Katchafire are one of the hardest working bands in New Zealand. As well as opening shows for the likes of Damien Marley, Michael Franti and Spearhead, they have played gigs all across the country (three in one day on Waitangi Day 2004, in Hamilton, Manukau and Nelson!), undertaken four tours of Australia, and in November 2004, they headlined a stadium-filling show in Fiji. In March 2005 all their dreams came true when they supported the original Wailers in Auckland. 2006 was their busiest year yet: two tours of Hawaii plus their debut tours of England, Ireland and the west coast of America. They are now working on their third album, due out September, to be released by EMI Music who the band recently signed a licensing deal with.

2007 sees the band with a busy international calendar taking the stage in places such as; Roskilde in Denmark, Rototomsplash in Italy, SummerJam in Germany, Larmer Tree and Rhythms of the World in England.  Estimated crowds are at around 300, 000 in total with Rototumsplash and Summer Jam two of the most highly regarded and attended reggae festivals in Europe, if not the world.  They also return to Hawaii playing at the Big Birthday Bash in Waikiki, Australia, Guam, Japan and Tahiti.

The band have had sustained domestic exposure; doing gigs for corporates such as Air New Zealand, Vodafone Warriors, and festivals such as Soundsplash, Rhythm and Vines and World Waka Ama Championships.  They also continue to work PR opportunities having recently featured in TV3 News on their latest trip to London and also gracing the cover of the latest NZ Musician Magazine, with a three page article covering the band.  The band continues to uphold its reputation as one of NZ’s hardest working bands.

Growing up in the first garden city of Letchworth in Hertfordshire is generally a pretty quiet affair, unless of course you’re locked away in a small rehearsal room for hours a day jamming with your mates at high volume, feverishly learning the craft of writing the perfect pop song. Brought together by the boredom of greenbelt town life and the love of pop music this is exactly how Blonde Louis spent their former years.

Jack Cox (drums), Jack Cherry (bass) and cousins Harvey Downes (guitar) and Josh Clarke (guitar/vocals), with an average age of 18, spent as many spare moments as possible jamming in small rehearsal rooms on the school grounds. All products of the new digital music age in which they have grown up in, they cite influences in songs rather than artists and are as equally comfortable listening to Enter Shikari as they are Pixie Lott.

Blonde Louisʼ music exudes these contemporary music sensibilities, placing emphasis on the strength of each individual track they produce. “We want to make an album of 10 singles, weʼre going to aim for that you know”, says lead singer Josh Clarke defiantly.

With local venues packed to the rafters with ecstatic teenage fans and word of mouth excitement about the band spreading at a rapid pace to the wider reaches of the UK, Blonde Louis are striking a chord with the youth looking for a band to represent them.

Over the course of six albums and a decade of touring, JJ Grey’s grimy blend of front porch soul and down-home storytelling has taken him around the world and back again. Beating the streets on nearly every continent, he and his band Mofro have sewn a continuous thread of laying-it-on-the-line shows that move folks to dance and at times to tears.

JJ was raised in North Florida by a typically Southern extended family that valued hard work and self-reliance. This upbringing permeates his no nonsense approach to writing and performing and has given him an abundance of material to write about in his songs. “A friend of mine once said that we’re all characters if we’re given enough room to be one. I guess I was lucky enough to be surrounded by people who had plenty of room cause Lord knows I know some larger than-life ones. I’ve had a lot of laughs and good times with those characters. We’ve shared some hard times too.”

These characters and JJ’s own triumphs and struggles, make regular appearances throughout his lyrics. “Looking at his show now, it’s remarkable to think how far he’s come, and to realize the creative spirit and force of will it’s taken to get there,” says longtime producer and friend Dan Prothero. “But it’s also remarkable to see him up there singing about the worst of it, and smiling a smile that has come from accepting the good with the bad. In recent years I think he’s come to realize that the fighting stance that seemed to get him where he needed to go back then wasn’t getting him where he needed to go now, and so he changed. Letting go and letting it all happen is at the heart of his creative process now.”

“The best songs I’ve ever wrote, I never wrote. They wrote themselves. The best show I ever played, played itself and had little to do with me or talent. To me those things come from the power of an honest moment and I guess I’m trying to live in that power and not force life to cough up what I want. That power is always there whether I’m aware of it or not. Force is the opposite. It requires effort and comes at a great cost. The cost has always been my freedom to truly enjoy what I’m doing while I’m doing it.”

April 2013 brings the release of JJ’s sixth studio album, This River. Named for the St. John’s River — a centering point for his childhood near Jacksonville, Florida — This River flows from freewheeling celebrations (“Florabama”) to dark inner journeys (“Somebody Else”), from late night, beer-soaked testimonials (“Your Lady”) to heartfelt ballads of the almost-forgotten (“The Ballad Of Larry Webb”), and ends with the title track and a singularly devastating vocal performance. With Dan Prothero at the helm as producer, JJ and the band once again returned to Retrophonics Studio in nearby St. Augustine, Florida and muscled out some of JJ’s strongest material to date.

“We set up much like we do for our shows, and cut the tracks as close to live as possible,” says Grey, “there’s something about everybody getting into one room and playing together. It brings some spark that can sometimes get lost in the shuffle of too much overdubbing.”

JJ’s band Mofro has also been a decade in the making. Over that time, great players have come and gone, but according to JJ, the present incarnation — with Art Edmaiston on saxophone, Dennis Marion on Trumpet, Anthony Farrell on organ and piano, Todd Smallie on Bass, Anthony Cole on drums and Andrew Trube on guitar – is “the creme de la crème”

“These musicians I get to play with make it look easy. I’ve learned so much from them about music and about life in general. It ain’t always easy to keep a core together when you do so many shows a year, year after year, but I truly hope to keep these guys together as long as possible.”

Many of Grey’s songs reflect his love for the North Florida wilderness in which he grew up. Having watched his native home be decimated by egregious development, and this has often figured heavily into his lyrics. He now works with groups such as The Snook & Gamefish Foundation and the St. Johns Riverkeepers, but still doesn’t consider himself
an environmentalist.

“I guess I’ve never really believed that there is an environment that’s separate from me. I reckon that my connection to the environment, which I could call my home, is part of the connection to myself. I believe that whatever I do to my home and everything in it, I in-turn do to myself.”

From his early days playing cover music behind chicken wire at a Westside (Jacksonville) juke joint to playing sold-out shows and some of the largest music festivals in the world, it’s been a long road. But JJ has no illusions about where he’s] headed or where he’s been. When prompted with questions about his past accomplishments or future plans, JJ lays down a little backwoods wisdom: “I’m just a salmon swimming up stream. Going back home I reckon. I don’t know why and I quit caring why a long time ago. I guess there is no ‘why’ that my mind could] understand anyway. All I do know is that I’ve enjoyed and I’m still enjoying every second of just being here and doing whatever it is I’m doing.”

JJ Grey is from Jacksonville, Florida. He made his recording debut in 2001 with Blackwater, following up in 2004 with Lochloosa (both albums reissued by Alligator). In 2007 Grey released his Alligator debut, Country Ghetto, followed by 2008’s Orange Blossoms. With the release of 2010’s Georgia Warhorse, Grey stepped further into the mainstream view with the AAA radio breakout single The Sweetest Thing. In 2011 the full fury of the bands live show was captured on the live CD/DVD Brighter Days.

JJ has played countless festivals, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Austin City Limits Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival (Australia), Montreal Jazz Festival and Fuji Rock (Japan). Over the course of his career, Grey has shared stages with the likes of Lenny Kravitz, B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Jeff Beck, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples and many others. In 2011 the band extensively toured the UK. That same year, back in the USA Grey embarked on his first-ever solo tour, playing packed-to-capacity clubs. The band returned to Europe in 2012, playing multiple dates in the UK, Germany and The Netherlands. Grey and his band, who continue to play over 125 shows a year, will return to Europe in 2013.

JJ’s songs have appeared in film and network television including House, Flashpoint, Crash, Friday Night Lights, The Glades, The Deadliest Catch and the film The Hoot. In November 2009, JJ wrote his first film score for the critically acclaimed, Emmy Awardwinning documentary The Good Soldier that appeared in theatres and on Bill Moyers’ Journal on PBS. In 2010, JJ played piano, sang and contributed a song (“The Wrong Side”) to Buckwheat Zydeco’s Grammy-winning Alligator Records album Lay Your Burden Down. JJ also appears on Shemekia Copelands’ Grammy-nominated 2012 CD 33 1/3.

This short but significant excerpt of the track „Sons of Winter And Stars“ not only is the wake-up call for everyone interested in music, it´s the battle cry of a band that released their self-titled debut album eight long years ago and had had to live up to the highest expectations and pressure of time for the eagerly awaited successor ever since. As „Wintersun“ turned out to be a critically-acclaimed masterpiece of musical art, the band unintentionally found themselves facing the situation of having to out-do their previous work, and soon.

2012 it´s finally time to unleash WINTERSUN´s second full-length album „TIME I“. Over the course of eight years the band have taken both music and visuals to yet another level and while listening to their new effort you´ll be taken on a journey through the doors of time, a journey beyond the stars, beyond the birth of the worlds to an infinite universe.

The main goal was to make an album that would be really astonishing to listen to, because the concept of time itself is simply just that: astonishing, overwhelming, staggering. So the lyrical concept of the album is naturally about time but it´s also about the human experience and consciousness in this vast universe and how short the time we have in this life is. It´s about deep emotions and overwhelming feelings between birth and death we all share in our lives. Love, hate, sorrow, despair, wistfulness…

From capturing the outstanding musical performance of the band to making all the breathtaking layers of orchestrations the original vision was captured with an uncompromised quality. The whole production process was taken to a great extend to ensure the album staying very dynamic through the whole epic journey. With a wide scale of varying dynamics between soothing quiets and exploding highs, „TIME I“ is like a movie soundtrack experience as the album unfolds all its magnificence, power and beauty step by step with every listen. As the complete „time saga“ with more than 80 minutes total playing time being very complex and full of details would have been too much to digest in one piece, it´s been divided into two parts named „TIME I“ and „TIME II“.

Treasured details, epic orchestration, the musical and lyrical concept – all of these give the record a tremendous profoundness. Now, you take your time and allow yourself to get deep into the album and enjoy the epic journey of TIME!

]]> In 1977, at the dawn of the punk movement the Misfits set out to make an impression, and created a legacy that has truly
withstood the test of time. Immortalizing black and white B horror films in their music, the Misfits developed a ghoulish and totally unique persona that’s consistently evolved, while remaining true to its roots. The band’s iconic “Fiend Skull” logo has become a staple in pop culture, and an instantly recognizable symbol worldwide. Bands across the spectrum of rock have covered their material, including Metallica, Guns ‘n’ Roses, My Chemical Romance and countless others citing the ‘Fits as a key influence. Boasting a massive catalog of music, a new lineup, (consistently helmed by founding member Jerry Only), and an influence felt around the world, the Misfits are generating more interest today than ever before. With new releases charting higher than all priors, and constant worldwide touring, their diverse demographic and legion of “fiends” (as their fans are affectionately known), multiplies daily.

After a split in the mid 1980′s and a decade-long hiatus, The Misfits was resurrected by founding member Jerry Only,
returning stronger than ever on Geffen Records, and reestablishing the ‘Fits as one of the most aggressive and still relevant outfits in modern rock history. Thematically, the band’s music continued to focus on their time-honored fascination with vampires, monsters, and alien invasion. “We are the Misfits after all,” warns Only about the band’s refusal to address worldly issues, he explains, “Fiends who buy our records and come to see us perform enter another world – from the guy all the way back in the balcony, to the guy getting his head banged around in the front – they come to have a good time. And we make sure they have it. They can hear about social and political issues somewhere else.”

The band’s last full length release, 2003’s “Misfits Project 1950,” showcased punk covers of 50′s era classics with special
guest appearances by Ronnie Spector, Blondie’s Jimmy Destri and many more. Only, who had the project in mind for many years, says, “The backbone of punk has always been the 3-chord progression which was ultimately inspired by classic rock and roll of the 1950′s. I had always wanted to record some of the music that inspired the Misfits, to show fiends where it all began.” Released independently on the newly formed Misfits Records label imprint, the CD debuted on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart at #2, and Billboard’s Top Independent album chart at #5. Notably the highest charting release in the entire 30-plus year legacy of the Misfits, “Project 1950” also marked the first full-length release to feature Jerry Only on both lead vocals and Bass, with former Black Flag alum Dez Cadena on guitar.

Today, The Misfits remain more aggressive, more topical and more sought after than ever before, fronted by Jerry Only (Bass/Vocals) with Dez Cadena on guitar, (celebrating his 10th anniversary in the band this year), the latest addition to the fiendish fold is drummer Eric “Chupacabra” Arce behind the kit. Arce, or “Chupacabra” as he’s now known, has been a fixture in the ‘Fits touring lineup for over a decade, and recently inducted a permanent member upon the retirement of original Misfits drummer Robo, who’d passed the torch in 2010. Now, the ‘Fits return with their first full-length release of all-new, original material in nearly a decade! Rooted in the horror and sci-fi themes their audience craves, “The Devil’s Rain” showcases 16 fiendish, soon-to-be Misfits classics including “Twilight of the Dead”, “Dark Shadows”, “Curse of the Mummy’s Hand” and the title track “The Devil’s Rain”. Produced by Ed Stasium, (who’s credits include the Ramones’ “Road to Ruin” and “Too Tough to Die”, as well as the Misfits’ 1999 release “Famous Monsters”), the album showcases a jaw-dropping, twopanel front/back cover painting featuring the rebirth of the band’s iconic “Fiend” mascot in an epic setting rendered by Arthur Suydam (known for his immensely popular work on the Marvel Zombies series, among others). The packaging, designed to emulate a CD sized gatefold LP, also features some incredible new Misfits portraits shot by the legendary Mick Rock. Rock’s imagery has become part of the very fabric of rock ‘n’ roll. Having also served as an on-set photographer for cult-movie classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, Rock lends a perfectly suited eye to view the band’s surrealistic and highly theatrical persona. “The Devil’s Rain” is not just a continuation of a historic legacy, it’s a total reboot ushering in a new era of terror. In a sense, it’s the debut album from the legendary Misfits of this decade. ]]> It is a well-worn joke in rock circles, “they are big in Japan.” Rather than spending their time searching for fame, Baltimore’s Arbouretum has instead concentrated on honing their craft. It just so happens that the muse that guides them is completely outside of current rock trends. Like Richard Thompson’s work from the mid-70s, the band’s poetic lyrics and slow, heavy build are not stuff of the quick fix. Their music stands in stark contrast to a culture that is more about video and track placement than criticism and discourse. As such, it should come as no surprise that they have found success in the United Kingdom, Thompson’s birthplace. Arbouretum has been praised in Mojo 4 star reviews that end with phrases like “It just does not get much better,” a Guardian piece proclaiming that they are “One of the most distinctive voices around” and an Uncut 4 star review calling the music “Dense, thrilling and literate.”

Coming out of the Fog continues Arbouretum’s journey as their most focused and best-recorded album to date. Dave Heumann’s vocals soar atop his guitar solos and Corey Allender’s crunchy bass lines. Arbouretum have reigned in some of their maximalist tendencies, with every song coming in under 7 minutes. Heumann, Allender, Brian Carey (drums), and Matthew Pierce (keyboard, synthesizer, percussion), continue to mine the same breadth of styles made familiar on The Gathering and Song of the Pearl, notably the languid ballads, fuzzed-out burners, and heavier songs that have defined the group’s unique doom laden folk-rock sound.

Throughout Coming Out of the Fog, Heumann’s vocals take on a meditative quality, melodies unraveling effortlessly over Carey’s steady grooves. Syncopated rhythms come to the fore on “The Promise,” building tension, and leading to a climax of synth swells and chromatic guitar lines. Elsewhere, on “Oceans Don’t Sing,” guest musician Dave Hadley’s plaintive pedal-steel guitar lays a bed for some of Heumann’s most impassioned singing set to tape. Spending time on pre-production allowed for a more detailed approach to recording. Carey’s drums were tuned specifically for almost every track on the album, and tape was used to achieve the warmth only found in analog.

When taken as a whole, the lyrical theme of an individual’s relationships and struggles with forces larger than one’s self emerges. In “The Long Night,” a protagonist is faced with a metaphysical blackness, a dark night of the soul. “Renouncer” was inspired by Colin Dickey’s book The Afterlives of the Saints. It references the story of Saint Simeon, who traveled into the Syrian Desert and lived perched on a column for 36 years, living a life of death in an attempt to become closer to God. Bolstered by Heumann’s naturalistic imagery, “Oceans Don’t Sing” reflects on humanity’s powerlessness in the face of time’s steady passing. An exception to much of the record’s darkness, the title track is calming and reassuring, carried by Pierce’s affecting, sparse piano lines. Coming Out of the Fog is a well-crafted thing of beauty, an album that reveals itself more with every listen and whose lyrics take the listener out of themselves.

]]> Front Line Assembly is the primary focus of Vancouver-based musician Bill Leeb. A founding member of Skinny Puppy, Leeb moved on to form FLA in 1986 with Michael Balch. FLA enraged many of their fans in 1994 when they began to experiment with their established electronic-only sound. Millenium, with its heavy doses of live and sampled metal guitars, dared its audience to grow and expand with the band beyond industrial’s perceived barriers. Front Line Assembly’s 1998
album, FLAvor of the Weak, featured the band’s first flirtation with electronica. Then finally in 2005 came the event that everyone was waiting for, a Front Line Assembly fusion. Heavy pounding beats, atmospheric strings, percolating melodies, dynamic synths and Bill Leeb’s trademark vocals couldn’t be fused together any tighter if you tried to do it at an atomic level. Throughout the years, FLA has seen many line-up changes, although Bill Leeb remains the constant behind the band.

Haujobb are part of the newest wave of electronic Dance acts to come storming out of Europe. Along with such other notables as :wumpscut: and VNV Nation, Haujobb are bringing, if possible, an even newer surge of adrenaline to a genre that already seems expanding to burst. Haujobb formed as a trio in 1993 in Germany, with B. Junemann being the third member to the current duo of Dejan Samardzic and Daniel Myer.

Multiple Grammy & WC Handy Award winner, Joe Louis Walker is one of the most heralded Blues artists of our time. He is a true powerhouse guitar virtuoso, unique singer and prolific songwriter who has toured the world religiously throughout his career and earned himself a legion of dedicated fans. He has recorded with the likes of BB King, James Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Huey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, and Ike Turner, with a discography that counts 18 solo albums, 2 live DVD’s, and countless compilations and guest appearances.

Still recording & touring with a vengeance, JLW is already being referred to within the blues world as a “living legend.” However, as Walker himself would say, “the best is yet to come!” JLW is currently in the studio working on a new Blues release as well as a Gospel album featuring a myriad of legendary guests. This is JLW’s first and only London performance since two sold out nights at Ronnie Scott’s in October 2010.

JLW is joined for this show only by young British Blues phenomenon Aynsley Lister and his full band, who open the show as very special guests. Reckoned by many to be one of the most exciting young guitarists since Clapton at his peak. Aynsley has youth, good looks, outrageous amounts of talent and a record deal to boot.

Influenced from an early age by the 1960s RnB era, Lister takes these key elements and mixes them with a more current and melodic lyrical approach. He was the only British artist to be featured in Classic Rock’s Top 10 Contemporary Blues Rock Artists.

]]> Fermín Muguruza is an unquestionable figure on the international music scene. Originally from Irún, in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the early 80s he founded one of the most influential Basque groups: Kortatu. This band, strongly politically and socially committed, started singing in Spanish, switching to Euskera as Muguruza learned the language, while adding touches of ska, punk and reggae.

In the late 80s, Fermín Muguruza entered a new stage during which he combined his work as a radio host, directing the musical magazine Igo Bolumena (Pump Up the Volume) for the defunct Radio Egin, with the creation of his new group, Negu Gorriak, going on to tour Europe and America together. Meanwhile, he created the Esan Ozenki label, which published his records and helped several bands to take their first steps. Having made 6 records, the members of the group went their own ways and Muguruza launched a solo career packed with collaborations and different musical styles including reggae, funk, jazz and electronic.

In 2003, he set out on the Jai Alai Katumbi Express world tour with Manu Chao, one of his best friends from the Kortatu period, playing a medley of numbers from their long careers. Following the 2004 international tour with his own band, Fermin Muguruza Kontrabanda, in 2006 his new TALKA label signed the work Euskal Herria Jamaika Clash, recorded in Jamaica and featuring many of the country’s big music names. This experience led to his first documentary, “Bass-que Culture”, describing how the record was made at the Marley family studios.

In 2008, he published his last studio work to date, “Asthmaticic Lion Sound Systema”, recorded in over 20 different cities the world over, and directed the documentary “Checkpoint Rock. Canciones desde Palestina”, a film which went on to become a reference at San Sebastian Festival in 2009. He also wrote the soundtrack for the short El salto de Beamon, composed the songs for the play Xomorroak (Bizitza Lorontzian)/Bichitos (La vida en el tiesto) and created the soundtrack for Jesús Garay’s movie Mirant al Cel.

In 2010 and 2011 Muguruza directed the documentary series called NEXT MUSIC STATION about music in Arab world, covering Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen and Sudan, for Al Jazeera Documentary Channel and Al Jazeera English.

The last work by Muguruza has been the direction of the documentary ZULOAK . In this documentary he follows the career of the all-female rock band ZULOAK, to vindicate the contribution made by other important musical artists in the Basque Country as well.

]]> Marcel Everett, better known as XXYYXX, is an electronic musician and producer from Orlando, Florida. He is most notable for gaining a prominence within the indie music culture, despite his young age and experimental lo-fi music, which he made in his bedroom with self-made synthesizers as well as Fruity Loops Studio and software from Ableton.

According to The Needle Drop, XXYYXX’s music contains “every new sound sprouting up in electronic music”. Everett himself described his music as “Doing drugs on a freeway… underwater,” in an interview with Relief in Abstract Records. His style was also likened to Clams Casino, Zomby and James Blake and The Weeknd. His musical influences include Lapalux, Star Slinger, Disclosure and Shlohmo.

A music video for his song, About You, which has over 8 million views was directed by Jeffrey Vash.

XXYYXX has also made remixes for artists such as Tinashe and Usher.

It was announced in January 2013 that XXYYXX would be one of the headliners of the San Francisco Noise Pop festival in February, 2013.

]]> Fronting Yashin is something that remains incredibly important to Florida born Radford but as the touring and promo cycle of their acclaimed 2012 album We Created A Monster came to an end he found he had ideas, music and importantly a reserve of energy in the tank, so set out on a mission to see if he could record and release a solo ep – he succeeded!

“I love all different kinds of music as long as it’s hooky and is well crafted and this is something I’ve really wanted to do for just over a year now, I had so many ideas and songs banging around in my head that didn’t feel real, or would ever be real, until they were out there. I’m lucky, I had the opportunity to explore these ideas. it’s an exciting and scary time but I love it. I remember when I first I sat down with my friend, producer Simon Janlov (SUMO) and he said; “so what kind of thing we going for here, what do you want to create?” It felt like I was walking out on the stage for the first time again, just total excitement, very inspiring.”

‘’EP title; Pressure Makes Diamonds I’m so relieved and happy that I accomplished releasing this ep, despite all the hurdles. Black & Blue is a positive song even though it’s touching on a dark subject. My parents divorced when I was young – it was a hard time and my dad and I never quite saw eye to eye – despite everything, I forgive him for what happened. Cherry Lips Is about one of the best nights of my life I had with a girl I used to know. It’s rare when you just meet someone and everything just clicks and infatuation comes from out of nowhere.’’

]]> Following this week’s UK release of their critically acclaimed new studio album If the River Was Whiskey, the legendary Spin Doctors return to London on Wednesday 25thSeptember  to perform a rare concert at The Garage in Islington. Special guest is Dodgy.

Spin Doctors, best known for their multi-million-selling album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, and hit singles Two Princes and Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong, have come full circle by releasing a seminal blues rock album which harks back to the late eighties when they used to play the blues circuit in New York City. The original line-up features Chris Barron(vocals), Aaron Comess (drums), Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass).

“When we first started we were four guys in our twenties,” remembers Aaron Comess. “The blues was such a big part of our roots. One of the reasons we came up with such a big catalogue of blues songs back then is that we’d play these downtown blues bars in New York. We were supposed to perform blues covers, but we actually wrote and performed our own blues songs.”

If The River Was Whiskey hits rewind. It’s the deep-blues album the Spin Doctors almost made before mega stardom came knocking. It finally bottles those near-mythical songs from that sweatbox circuit. It’s a homage to the band’s lost past and the freshest record you’ll hear all year. “Every note feels dangerous,” says Chris Barron.

Mike Dignam, singer/songwriter from Preston wrote and recorded his debut album in 2008. Over the past four year he has been on an incredible journey; perfecting his craft and seeking inspiration. The journey has taken him from busking on the streets of London through to collaborations with international songwriters.

Often compared to successful artists such as James Morrison and Jason Mraz, Mike Dignam has built up a massive fan base and a huge online following.  He already has numerous releases to his name, each receiving critical acclaim.

2012 highlights include working with top industry songwriters Invisible Men and Steelworks, collaborating with The Mend and Janet Devlin and being honoured among the elite Hofner artists. ]]> The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, who can lay a pretty good claim to being the UK’s biggest Steampunk band, are planning on just one London gig this spring and they are bringing their inspired brand of Victoriana and lunacy to The Garage.

The four piece, who formed in 2008 aiming to put actual ‘Punk’ into the burgeoning Steampunk movement, have released two full albums of steam-fuelled-knees-up Victorian punk and metal, a Christmas EP on 7”, two music hall tracks on wax cylinders (the first releases on that format in over 70 years!) and their most recent release, ‘Margate Fhtagn’ was a custom made stick of rock, containg a download code. Bearing all that in mind you’d be forgiven for dismissing them as novelty, but that would discount the slew of four and five star reviews, shows in the US and across the UK including the Edinburgh Festival and Latitude and Bestival, sell out shows in their native London, not to mention a growing and increasingly devoted fan base that spans the world.

The band comprises former Creaming Jesus vocalist ANDY HEINTZ (vocals/musical saw), “occult comedian” ANDREW O’NEILL (vocals/guitars), fellow comedian and journalist MARC BURROWS (vocals/bass) and one time Lords Of The New Church and Showgirls man JEZ MILLER (vocals/drums). The mix of styles the foursome bring to the table -punk rock, metal, goth, psychedelia, hardcore and of course comedy- creates a completely unique 21st century take on Music Hall, which has won them fans as diverse as comic book legend Alan Moore, comedian Phil Jupitus (who opened for the band in December) best selling author and Doctor Who scribe Neil Gaiman, Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins and fantasy author Robert Rankin.

In the last few years the band have enjoyed air time on BBC Radio 1 and 5Live and a session for Kerrang! Radio, have appeared on BBC1 and graced the pages of The Independent On Sunday, Terrorizer, Bizarre, Metal Hammer, Big Cheese, NME, The Guardian and many more. Meanwhile co-front man Andrew O’Neill, gaining a cult following in his own right, has appeared on ‘Nevermind The Buzzcocks’, ‘Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle’ and alongside Steve Coogan in ‘Saxondale’, hosted the Metal Hammer Golden Gods (twice), appeared at Download, Leeds Festival and Sonisphere and performed acclaimed stand-up tours of Australia and the UK.

The band are booked for several UK festival appearances this summer and will also be undertaking their first Australian tour, but for now this is the only chance fans have to see them in action on the London stage!

]]> MADINA LAKE ANNOUNCES FINAL EP & FAREWELL TOUR

Madina Lake has officially announced plans for a final EP and a ”Farewell UK Tour”.  Tentatively titled “Buena Fortuna”, the band is expecting a Fall release to coincide with the tour which kicks off in September.  Front man Nathan Leone says “It’s been a majestic run and we couldn’t be happier or more grateful for everything we’ve been able to accomplish as Madina Lake”.  He want on to add “that as sad as it is to be closing this chapter,  we’re much more excited to open the next one”.

“Buena Fortuna: marks the bands 5th release in almost 10 years together.  Debut LP, “From Them Through Us to You” introduced an ambitious trilogy concept which continued with 2009′s “Attics to Eden” and concluded with 2011′s  ”World War III”.  In 2012 Madina Lake released a book that spelled out the underlying storyline binding each record called “Lila the Divine Game”.

After almost 5 years on the road, the Chicago based band was forced on haitus in 2010 when bassist Matthew Leone was nearly beaten to death intervening in a domestic dispute.  ”We’d toured relentlessly before Matthew’s incident and ever since, we decided to cut back dramatically to ensure his full recovery.”

In 2011, guitarist Mateo Camargo  briefly left the band for personal reasons but returned for 2012′s “Lila the Divine” tour in the UK. ”Buena Fortuna” which translates to “good luck” in Italian promises to be an “elegant” finale to the band’s tenure and they plan to announce new endeavors shortly.

]]> This is not another story of a band starting out on the road for glory, but one of a band already on the road doing what bands should do… And their story has already begun.

With tales of impending success including touring with the likes of the Pigeon Detectives, receiving national airtime across Radio 2, recording with Grammy Award winning Bob Clearmountain and signing their first record deal it seemed as if everything was about to happen… Yet with a turn of bad luck, what happened was they found themselves stranded at Heathrow airport, without money or jobs to return to and with a manager who had deserted them. Kindly before leaving though, he had amassed a trail of debt in their name. With a tarnished reputation, it seems Famous Villains was an obvious choice of name.

In spite of the financial and emotional fallout from their former band, “The Wallbirds,” Anthony Lindley (lead vocal/ rhythm guitar) and Chris Autey (drums) had no regrets and were not about to give up. In 2012, they got together with old school friend Neil Smith (lead guitar) and classically trained Tobin James (keys). Famous Villains were born and have been playing throughout their native Doncaster and South Yorkshire ever since.

Melding the raw and soulful melodies of Wilson Pickett with the edgier guitar driven music of bands like Jawbreaker, Famous Villains play energetic and harmony-laden rock. Remarkably they show no sign of past disappointment, instead just an up-beat infectious attitude evocative of The Beatles… Serious about music but unaffected by everything else.

2013 started off the way they intend it to end… On the road! Having just completed a tour of the north, they are happy to announce they will be appearing at Wilderness Festival this summer. In the meantime listen out for Spies on BBC Introducing Sheffield, Sine FM and keep an eye out for further shows on their facebook…

Rapidly rising progressive hard rock five piece Touchstone was formed in 2003 by keyboard player Rob Cottingham & guitarist Adam J Hodgson. Bassist Paul Moorghen joined in 2006, and award-winning vocalist Kim Seviour joined in 2007. Henry Rogers completed the line up on drums in June 2010.

Touchstone released their first studio EP ‘Mad Hatters’ in 2006, swiftly following up with debut album ‘Discordant Dreams‘ in July 2007 with John Mitchell (Kino, It Bites, Arena, Frost*) mixing, and Tim Turan (Motorhead, Frost*, Marilyn Manson) mastering the LP.  However it was the band’s second album ‘Wintercoast‘ that really put Touchstone on the map in 2009, with Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons featuring as a very special guest performing the prelude narration. The album was voted 4th best album of 2009 by PROG Magazine readers and by Classic Rock Magazine’s Geoff Barton in the Critics’ Choice.

In 2010 Touchstone opened the first ever High Voltage Festival in London’s Victoria Park, playing alongside bands such as ELP, ZZ Top, Black Label Society among countless others. The band have toured worldwide including appearances at major festivals in the UK, Poland and USA, and have supported prog rock legends It Bites, Arena, Von Hertzen Brothers, Magenta, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot’s ‘Down n Outz’ band, and Quireboys to name a few.

In October 2011 Touchstone released their third studio album ‘The City Sleeps’ to exceptional critical acclaim, entering the official UK rock charts at No.36. The album has gained outstanding reviews across the board in UK & Europe and won numerous plaudits including being amongst the top 20 albums of 2011 in the Classic Rock Magazine Critics’ Choice Awards and being voted 5th Best Album of the Year 2011 by PROG Magazine readers. Incredible award-winning female vocalist Kim Seviour was also awarded 2nd best female vocalist. The band were nominated in the New Blood category at the inaugural Progressive Music Awards 2012.

Touchstone’s brand new 4th studio album is due for release early October 2013.

VON HERTZEN BROTHERS

True to their name, the Von Hertzen Brothers are bonded by blood and this brotherly connection really shines through in the music. Formed initially as a project in 2000 in their hometown of Helsinki, they have since reached far and wide with their epic rock.

It’s rare for a progressive and challenging rock album to top the national charts but Von Hertzen Brothers did it three times – with their 2nd album, Approach, with their 3rd, Love Remains The Same, and again with their 4th album, 2011′s Stars Aligned. All three albums have been certified gold in their native Finland.

Their 2011 release Stars Aligned also helped the band make major inroads into the UK where they played a number of headline shows and drew huge crowds to the Prog Stage at the High Voltage festival in London. They were nominated for the ‘Best New Band‘ Award at Classic Rock Magazine‘s annual awards show and the “New Blood” category at the Classic Rock Prog awards 2012. After touring widely throughout the European mainland they spent the autumn of 2012 in studio preparing their 5th release.

Their 5th studio album, Nine Lives, will be released in March 2013. The album was preceded by a new single and video – ‘Flowers & Rust’ – released on Feb 4th, 2013.

Musically it is impossible to pigeonhole these brothers of rock.  Although their music embraces so many unique rhythms and abstract scales, using traditional rock instruments makes it all approachable and intriguing. This blending of the familiar with the unfamiliar results in mishmash that somehow makes perfect sense. There are elements of classic rock bands in the bands music, yet it always feels fresh and modern.

Drawing lyrical influences from writers such as William Blake, classic Indian authors, the writings of the ancient mystics as well as contemporary playwrights, the songs originate from the deep yearning for freedom and peace of mind that the brothers feel.

“von Hertzen” is German and means “from the heart”.

]]> From September to November ORPHANED LAND will play stages all over Europe and present the new studio album “All Is One”. ORPHANED LAND, the pioneers of oriental metal music and warriors of light are in the final process of recording their long awaited new album. This release is the band’s 6th full length and marks another big step forward, it is the logical evolution from the last studio release “The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR”.

The title of the new album will be “All Is One” and it surfaces on June 24th (USA June 25th), 2013! Singer Kobi Farhi explains the material as follows: “”I’ll say it plain and simple – “All Is One” is ORPHANED LAND’s best album so far, I feel that we took all aspects to a new level – the way we write, arrange, play and produce. We recorded the album in 3 countries (Turkey, Sweden & Israel) and it turned out so strong, we can’t stop listening to it. The album is very rich in sound with more than 40 people participating (choirs, violins, and many traditional instruments, too). Our secret recipe was always the fact that unlike many other bands, ORPHANED LAND doesn’t follow ONE master mind that writes everything, we work in a way that All Is One. We create our music in a perfect blend of synergy and harmony and all the band members are a part of this process, we translate the album’s title and message exactly in the way we work, and we always hope we could give a bit of an inspiration to the people in the tragic Middle Eastern lands. We have fans all over the Middle East, we live in a place where huge amounts of people who consider themselves enemies still share one thing in common, they are all fans of ORPHANED LAND, and in these lands of orphans and bloody holy wars our only weapon is music, and hopefully we will grow to understand that All Is One.”

Sophie Hunger grew up in Switzerland, Britain and Germany. In 2006 she recorded her first album “Sketches on Sea“ in her own front room and sold several thousand copies through direct sales. As a result of this album and its success she started working with musicians like Erik Truffaz, The Youngs Gods and Stephan Eicher. Soon her work attracted attention outside Switzerland: The Guardian described her as “Laura Marling, Beth Orton and Björk in one folk-rocking package”, Le Monde as “excellent” and the German Deutsche Musikexpress as “breath-taking”. Her first studio album “Monday’s Ghost” came out 2008 and reached Number 1 in the Swiss Album Charts, as did her next album “1983” in 2010.

But Sophie Hunger’s success has gone far beyond the borders of her home country: she became the first Swiss act ever to play the prestigious Glastonbury Festival. In spring 2011 Sophie Hunger won the Swiss Award and the Prix de la Création Musicale de France. Also in 2011 she toured North America together with Madeleine Peyroux and the band Tinariwen. In Germany Hunger also won acclaim for her fictional columns in the quality newspaper die Zeit.

In spring 2012 she produced and staged the one-man show “Bob Dylan – Be Part of My Dream“ (in the framework of the Grammy Museum Exhibition) at Le Cité de la Musique, Paris, which will be reprised at the Montréal Jazz Festival this summer. In addition, this summer will see her contribution to the play „Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz” by Director Cornelia Rainer at the Salzburger Festspiele.

And finally in autumn Hunger is launching her new album in cooperation with producer Adam Samuels (Warpaint, Daniel Lanois, John Frusciante), which came together in Europe and America. The musicians featured on this album, among others are Josh Klinghoffer (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, PJ Harvey) Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes), Steven Nistor (Daniel Lanois, Danger Mouse), as well as Michael Flury, Simon Gerber and Alberto Malo of the Sophie Hunger Band. The launch of this CD will be followed by a tour of North America and Europe, starting in October 2012.

]]> The UK Subs are one of the few bands that have the respect of EVERYONE on the punk scene. Formed in 1976, ever-present in the band has been vocalist Charlie Harper. Now venerated as the godfather of UK punk, Harper emerged from Britain’s R&B scene. They continue to thrive, with 2010 marking the fifth decade in which the band had continually graced the scene. 2011 saw the release of the critically acclaimed ŒWork  In Progress¹ LP and they are widely recognised as one of the most consistent and visibly successful punk bands – maintaining and pioneering the true spirit of punk rock. With a powerful line up in place since 2005 (Jet ­ guitar / Alvin Gibbs – bass / Jamie Oliver ­drums), the UK Subs continue to entertain and enthuse.
