‘The Broken Wave’ (Static Caravan)
Having made something of an eccentric splash with an EP of 80s covers played on a music box, Hannah Peel dives into deeper sonic waters for her debut album. Her dreamily pretty songs take in off-kilter folk, spectral balladry and deftly-executed, thrumming electronics. At times, she wanders into territory vaguely reminiscent of Belle & Sebastian’s fragile indiepop of yore, but that’s far from the sum of ‘The Broken Wave’s ambition. ‘You Call This Your Home’ stands out as one of the most subtly bewitching singles of last year, whilst ‘The Parting Glass’ transcends its Irish roots to become a memorably eerie slab of folktronica. A promising first effort.
