‘The Golden Archipelago’ (Matador)
‘The Golden Archipelago’
Shearwater have long ridden a wave of critical acclaim, but where most bands are drowned by hyperbole and hype, this Austin three-piece have been quietly bubbling under the surface. The last of a thematic threesome that started with 2006’s ‘Palo Santo’ and continued with 2008’s ‘Rook’, ‘The Golden Archipelago’ is the crushing crescendo. It’s possibly the most ambitious and complex record they’ve released so far, yet the haunting understatement of ‘Hidden Lakes’ and the gentle flow of ‘God Made Me’ sound like they were created so gracefully and so effortlessly – an indication that they’ve truly perfected their art. A rich, textured and truly timeless record that’s as serene and sublime as the sun-littered island of its title and front cover.
