‘Graves’ (Full Time Hobby)
Every surf band worth its salt knows that brevity’s a virtue, but at 23 minutes long, Hooded Fang’s ‘Tosta Mista’ was slight-bordering-cadaverous. The Canadian band clocks up just seven added minutes on follow-up ‘Gravez’, but it’s a half-hour packed with ideas and wonky ambition. Not-quite title-track ‘Graves’ flares out the traps with thrashy abandon, but the record quickly slaloms off-piste to produce some striking moments – funky Kraut excursion ‘Genes’ is surprisingly evolved, while guitarist Lane Halley plays with no little force and imagination on ‘Ode To Subterranea’’s jittery psych and the wonderfully drunk-sounding ‘Trasher’. A treat.
