You’re silently contemplating life outdoors. As a bird sings, you start crying. Widowspeak’s engrossing second album brings this image vividly to life. Cinematic, tender, breathy and outdoorsy, it’s like watching The Notebook on DVD in the woods. As with Real Estate, producer Kevin McMachon has coaxed the wispy dreaminess of an excellent debut into a progressive, immersive successor. Molly Hamilton’s voice could break your heart into smithereens and Robert Earl Thomas’ dextrous guitars explore texture and density bravely. When closer ‘Storm King’ finishes, you’re left in urgent need of a rain-soaked Gosling embrace.
