Pissed Jeans
‘Honeys’ (Sub Pop)
Recommended Track
CathouseBands trading in ugliness as an aesthetic need other qualities if they’re to avoid being a drag. The Birthday Party had imagination and the wildman charisma of Nick Cave; The Jesus Lizard had a flair for dynamism that made the earache worthwhile. Philadelphia’s Pissed Jeans can’t quite match either of those influences, but have a great time trying on ‘Honeys’. But with the absurdist vocals of Matt Korvette – generously, a sort of post-hardcore David Thomas figure – too often inaudible, the band’s uncathartic noise can still test patience as well as nerves.
