…And so the relentless Robert Pollard juggernaut rolls on, effortlessly knocking out wonk-rock gems at every turn. Guided By Voices’ third album of 2012 (Bob’s fifth!) isn’t quite as compelling as the higgledy-piggledy glory of their razzle-dazzle years – buzzsaw rockers like ‘Up Instead Of Running’ graze the skin, where the band’s finest moments cut to the core. Still, one good-not-great GBV record is worth ten of most other bands’ career peaks, and the elegiac loveliness of ‘Waving At Airplanes’ proves they’re still more than adept at the ol’ cut’n’thrust. No new tricks, but there’s life in these old dogs yet.
