With a huge list of collaborations including independent music’s best-dressed man Twin Shadow and independent music’s saddest woman El Perro Del Mar, a glance at the tracklisting of Chad Valley’s debut album is a little alarming. Unfortunately, that alarm is quite justified. It’s not all bad news, but Hugo Manuel’s flimsy vignettes trade too heavily on those guest spots (who, by the way, mostly emerge unscathed) and never convince the way his clearly excellent taste suggests they might. Surrounding himself with talent that far surpasses his own doesn’t hide the weakness of many of these tracks.
