‘Jake Bugg’ (Mercury)
Britain can’t slake its thirst for nostalgiatinged working class troubadours, can it? But don’t button down Jake Bugg just yet. The 18-year-old’s eponymous debut delves a little deeper than most, often channelling the spirit of the 50s: swaggering strummer ‘Lightning Bolt’ is a pastiche of Cash and the Tennessee Two, while, crackly skiffle-ditty ‘Trouble Town’ and Hollies-ish slowburner ‘Slide’ are the record’s unequalled highs. Yes, the remainder is bogged by balladry and at times blighted by tales that teeter on puerile, but this Nottingham scamp has got chops beyond his tender years.
