‘Everything Touching’ (Big Scary Monsters)

This Brighton-based trio are a contradictory bunch; ‘Everything Touching’ appears to be a confluence of both the cool and the uncool. ‘T=0’, for instance, owes its mathletic riffology to Battles, but possesses the melodic chops of Keane’s early work. Similarly, a visit to Bon Iver’s woodside cabin inspires an impressive arrangement on ‘Idolatry’, albeit tempered by a latter portion that drifts into Coldplay-esque drabness. The overall feel is of a semi-fascinating compilation album, making Tall Ships easy to appreciate but very difficult to love.
