‘Overgrown Path’ (Captured Tracks)

“Torrent” might be bad vernacular when you’re talking about record labels, but it’s the only word that effectively describes the magnificence flowing from Brooklynbased Captured Tracks. This latest nugget is the debut full-length from Deerhoof guitarist Chris Cohen, offering psychedelic whimsy swaddled in
lo-fi production. Throughout, Cohen’s lulling baritone conjures subtly unsettling images (‘Open Theme’’s “under the crooked watchtower shadow” is storybook creepy, while ‘Rollercoaster Rider’’s description of a big dipper is supremely apathetic) which lend the whole thing an Instagramatic, retro-coloured veneer. Another twelve inches of brilliance.
