‘METZ’ (Sub Pop)
‘METZ’ is a persuasive debut. ‘Headache’, ‘Sad Pricks’ and ‘Nausea’ are appropriately labelled surges of savage hardcore, but the best moniker on this excellent, pushy album is saved for the closing track. ‘–))–’’s unintelligible name matches its build from silence to cochlea-lacerating surge of white noise. Like being KO’d by a brilliant boxer or run-over by a supercar, ‘METZ’ is pulverizing, but in an artistic, superior way; the Canada-based trio balance noise, aggression and tact expertly. If this record doesn’t persuade you that you’ve experienced an unstoppable force with near irreversible impact, it’s not METZ’s problem, it’s yours.
