Previous albums by Minnesota’s Dark Dark Dark have traded more on the idea of the band than their songs. Who wouldn’t love a huge, chaotic folk orchestra with a truly great name? Instead, ‘Who Needs Who’ sees them leanly and emotionally redefine themselves. Sonically it’s not massively different, but Nona Marie Invie’s vocals hit harder, closer and deeper than before. A peculiar nostalgic ache lingers on the opening title track and particularly so on ‘Patsy Cline’, the heartbreaking reminiscence of time spent with a now-missing lover. In short, this time, they’ve nailed it.
