‘Bend Beyond’ (WOODSIST)

4.5
By Ben Homewood 21 Sep 2012

On ‘Bend Beyond’, Woods stretch, twist and mould their tropical hypnotics further than ever before. Their seventh album, another near-flawless piece of work, deserves to be the one that exposes the New Yorkers, still sadly underrated alongside Cass McCombs and White Denim, further than ever too. Floating from crackle (‘Cascade’), gloom (‘It Ain’t Easy’) to sun-splashed breeziness (‘Cali In A Cup’), Woods excel at constructing effortless melodies that stagger into choruses and dissolve into psych jams, a trick best illustrated on ‘Size Meets The Sound’. On the fringes or not, they’re amassing an immersive, challenging catalogue defined by its excellence.
