Efterklang
‘Piramida’ (4AD)
An abandoned Arctic island that’s home to more polar bears than people is the best inspiration possible for an Efterklang album, so that’s where the Icelandic nutters went to make ‘Piramida’. Happily, it’s never frosty or bleak: though icy, plinking percussion and breathy orchestration grace the majority of this exquisitely scored feat, they’ve dressed it in a snug shawl to fight the cold. Details are not merely examined; they are forensically diced and arranged so that there are no rough patches. A typically Scandinavian work of ‘glacial’ beauty? No – this is a fully realised work of intellect and warmth.
