Methuselah, the world’s oldest known tree, stands in California and is nearly 5,000 years old. Things may have changed around it, but its remit has remained the same – just be there and be a tree. Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico, in the very best possible way, are turning their band into an old tree. Someone’s got to keep making emotive, dented, warm Latin Americana with incredible flair, and the task has fallen to them. ‘Algiers’, then, is everything we know Calexico to be: lucid with grit and tempered with melody, easily the equal of their career’s best work.
