‘Fragrant World’ (Mute)
Yeasayer’s 2010 album ‘Odd Blood’ was one of the most outlandish pop albums of recent years, bending a love of 80s chart music with sleazy disco dynamics and songs about boxing icon Primo Canera. ‘Fragrant World’ has, if anything, a much less commercial feel than Yeasayer have previously tried. The third chapter in an ever-evolving oeuvre, ‘Fragrant World’ sees the band explore the darker recesses of party life; ‘Damaged Goods’ and ‘Longevity’ lurk with a previously unheard menace, while ‘Henrietta’ recalibrates their pop nous into something more subtle. However, it’s the freakier corners here that shine bright like neon.
