In the three years since her 2009 debut ‘The Author’, Karima Francis’ feral vocal has not dulled. Raspy, distinctive, androngynous, arresting; there’s no doubt it’s her follow-up’s finest asset. However, the gripes of her debut album – chiefly that the quality of her songs didn’t always match the strength of her voice – again prevail here. Though the gospel-tinged ‘The Remedy’ is entirely captivating, there are too many underwhelmingly safe moments like ‘Crazy’ and ‘Stay’. Karima clearly has the talent, we just can’t wait until her songs are as exciting to listen to as her singing.
