It takes some talent to be able to make seething rage sound as sweet as ‘America’. At the heart of this DIY troubadour’s latest work is “confusion and apocalyptic anxiety over corporatism and war” but he finds solace in social activism, the geography of his native country and, presumably, catharsis through his skewed electronic chamber pop. Deacon’s recent forays into the classical world are reflected by the sumptuous strings, horns and synths-driven four part ‘USA’ song cycle that closes the album, but before then we’re treated to a cleverly pieced-together collage of thundering drums, airy harmonies and shimmering keys; all dreamily frenetic like a blissed out Fuck Buttons – that’s a very, very brilliant thing.
