Prior to breakthrough ‘Before Today’, Ariel Pink was ensconced in his own “retrolicious” world. Now, reliability and pop wizardry are expected. ‘Mature Themes’ delivers the former but shies from the latter: Ariel instead preferring to weave his weirdest ideas yet (see the “bad breath of a cross-eyed goat” on ‘Driftwood’) into a wildly imaginative spectrum of hooks, tricks and licks. ‘Schnitzel Boogie’ is a surrealist combination of fast food and giddy pop, while ‘Mature Themes’, ‘Only In My Dreams’ and ‘Baby’ (an inspired cover) add sex, accessibility and intimacy to a perfectly-crafted album rich in just about everything.
