The first Japandroids album appeared three years ago in a blur of claustrophobic fuzz and angular riffage, but the Vancouver duo have cleaned up their act for this sophomore effort. Bookended by snippets of crackling fireworks, the aptly-titled ‘Celebration Rock’ is big on anthems, euphoria and fistpumping rock’n’roll thrills. The melodic strut of ‘The House That Heaven Built’ is king of all it surveys, whilst the album’s spirit is pretty much summed up by the line: “Remember that night you were already in bed?/ Said ‘fuck it’, got up to drink with me instead”. Come join the party.
