Lots of thunderous drums and Malin Dahlstrom’s canyon-spanning vocals ensure that ‘Instinct’ is a tempestuous affair. The big, windswept choruses of ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Mother Protect’ could rival Florence & The Machine on the popmusic- as-a-force-of-nature front. Meanwhile, ‘The Fox’, with its prickly reverb and club-footed gait, boasts a pagan edge that Bjork would be proud of. However, what’s arguably the record’s strongest track, ‘Love To The Test’, sees the Swedes at their most chart-friendly. Here, slick and hooky synth pop is laced with some sass thanks to Malin sounding a bit like Gwen Stefani. Overall, this is a daring, dynamic and dramatic debut.
