The Enemy’s Tom Clarke is a selfdeclared everyman, and by Christ does he like to go on about it. Since their inception, his songs have been exclusively about a graying Britain that has always existed, rather than anything remotely revelatory. So when, on ‘This Is Real’, he tells of his plight (“I lie awake at night thinking of bills to pay/You know I work all day…”) the overwhelming urge is to grab the CD and shout, “FOR GOD’S SAKE, TOM, YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY PERSON EVER TO HAVE HAD A CRAP JOB.” Dull, simplistic and in no way relevant to actual life.

Very, very harsh. They're by no means the best band in the world, but I get the feeling the reviewer had already made up his mind about the album before he listened to it. The lyric that's pulled out is skewed to fit his pre-determined view about what the songs are about. It's not about work, it's about a girl. You can't just pull one single lyric from a song and lie about the whole theme of a record, although I doubt you actually listened past that line in the song.

I'm sure you will if you have that attitude before you even listen to them.
