BJM’s tortured genius hinges on exploiting the dichotomy between the predictable and the wildly unpredictable. With a Fall-rivalling rate of line-up changes and an equally belligerent frontman in Anton Newcombe, their music is comparatively, well, consistent. ‘Aufheben’ (‘abolish’ or ‘preserve’ in German) – is a comforting return to the hazy psychedelia and laconic 1960s bohemia of prime BJM, only now with added eastern twinges. Behind the circus of grumpy interviews and bust-ups, Newcombe again proves his unerring knack for creating holistic records (there’s no big-hitter here), with a transfixing, all-enveloping fug. Perseverence, it seems, is Anton’s virtue.
