‘AwEnaturalE’ (Sub Pop)
Having first grabbed our attention on Shabazz Palaces’ 2011 album ‘Black Up’, expectations are high for Sub Pop’s caps lock-loving duo THEESatisfaction. ‘AwENaturalE’ does not have the same murky heaviness that made the Shabazz album so easy to get lost in, favouring jazzy interludes and a freeform style to chest-rattling bass. When this works, as on the poppy ‘Queens’ and oh-so-direct ‘Bitch’, the album flies. However, more often than not Stasia Irons and Cat Harris-White get bogged down in a psychedelic maze, struggling to get their intelligent and issue-led rhymes heard above distracting production.
