Evans The Death
‘Evans The Death’ (Fortuna Pop)
“I have emotional problems,” admits Katherine Whitaker on ‘I’m So Unclean’, shortly following up with: “When I’m making a sandwich I will think of you.” This slightly-off-kilter lyrical slant is probably the most remarkable thing about Evans The Death’s Echobelly familiar indie. There’s an appropriate sun-rising-between-the-tower-blocks euphoria to ‘Sleeping Song’, and the chorus to ‘Telling Lies’ will embed itself in your memory whether you like it or not. Ultimately though, it’s early days for a band who, at present, are more wordy than wise – it’ll be interesting to see how they fare when life adds a little knowing weariness to Whitaker’s insouciant sighs.
