Sub Pop, so often associated with guitars and plaid, is undergoing something of a reinvention at the moment with Spoek Mathambo joining Shabazz Palaces and THEESatisfaction on a roster that is making the music world reassess its preconceptions. ‘Father Creeper’ would be a remarkable record regardless of its label though, with Spoek Mathambo’s mixture of rapid rhymes and genre-melding combining thrillingly. A cover of Joy Division’s ‘Control’ reinvents an indie classic, but it’s the original material such as ‘Kites’ and ‘Put Some Red On It’ that is exciting, fresh and memorable.
