‘Featherbrain’ (Propeller Recordings)

Hanne Hukkelberg’s latest is a masterclass in sinister soundscapes. Packed with the sort of distorted beauty that spiked St. Vincent’s recent album, and a giddy, gothic edge that Florence would self-flagellate for, the follow-up to 2010’s ‘Blood From A Stone’ is an exquisitely embroidered treasure that, with time, reveals its marred brilliance. Scratching and tugging with prickly precision, ‘Featherbrain’ proves unnervingly jagged, ‘The Devil’ caws in a twisted tUnE-yArDs timbre, whilst ‘You Gonna’’s pounding pots’n’pans stomp like Diane Cluck covering M.I.A.. Both bewitching and berserk, ‘Featherbrain’ keeps its creator comfortably in the shadows.
