Critics’ Choice, Best Newcomer, Best Collaboration… Emeli Sandé’s mantelpiece will already be creaking under the weight of gongs being thrown her way, no matter the longstanding impact of her debut album. As it happens, ‘Our Version Of Events’ is a witches’ broth of soothing vocals, swooshing 90s synths and computer drum beats; ‘Heaven’, in particular, is a straight-up purloining of Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’. Sure, it’s the sort of chart-friendly R&B that will have Simon Cowell furiously masturbating like a chimp in a cage; but whether that’s a good thing or not, is entirely your call.
