‘Blues Funeral’ (4AD)
Though the grappling guitars of ‘Riot In My House’ wouldn’t seem out of place on an MC5 album, ‘Blues Funeral’ doesn’t always kick out the jams; the 80s-pastiche of ‘Ode To Sad Disco’ flaps and flops about indulgently and ‘Harborview Hospital’ borrows The Edge’s delay pedal, invoking The Cure and Cold War Kids along the way. Elsewise, the fantastic ‘Leviathan’ is a sizzle of textured, brooding class while ‘Deep Black Vanishing Train’ is exactly what Alabama 3 think they sound like in acoustic mode. Proof, at least, that the blues still thrive.
