‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ (Virgin Records)

Air always sounded like they were floating in space, so it’s no surprise that when a hand-coloured print of the 1902 silent film ‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ was discovered, the French pair wrote a score for the 14-minute classic. Now, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel have expanded this trippy idea into a thematic, layered set of songs which are less sheenily polished than previous stuff. All instruments were played live, giving it a goofy gorgeousness that oozes with proggy/hippy/electroscope artistry; a late 60s exploration with a 90s pop predilection, there are moments of weightlessness and beauty here.
