Chairlift

‘Something ’ (Young Turks)

4.5
By Ben Homewood 20 Jan 2012

Emerging from difficult circumstances (Aaron Pfenning, co-founder and ex-boyfriend of singer Caroline Polachek, left the band in 2010), Chairlift’s second album is a joyous affair. Dark, bittersweet ballads, high-octane 80s electronics and innumerable hooks wrestle for centre stage, but the irrefutable star of the show is Polachek’s newly-unleashed vocal dexterity. Running a gamut of emotions a teenage girl would be proud of, she flits from slushy and downbeat (‘Turning’) to histrionic (‘Amanaemonesia’). Crucially, as well as highlighting Polachek’s ability, ‘Something’’s exquisite charms confirm that Chairlift mk.II are a much-improved proposition.
