‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’ (City Slang)

Despite earning a reputation as the one-hit wonders behind 1996’s ‘Popular’, Nada Surf have spent the past 15 years earning a sizeable following. Much of this is down to affably nerdy pop (‘Jules And Jim’), which represents a good opportunity to play College Rock Influence Bingo (“R.E.M.… Death Cab For Cutie… Bob Mould…” “HOUSE!”). Lyrically they aim for similar territory to Benjamin Gibbard, but too often fall back on trite aphorisms and cod-philosophy. Not exactly champion wordsmiths, then, but the ebulliently heart-warming rush of the tunes is reason enough to forgive any clunkers. Nice of them to stick around.
